Dalai Lama appears at right-wing US think tank

Smiling and in saffron robes, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Thursday brought a message of compassion and care for humanity to the free market mavens of a right-leaning Washington think tank. The revered Buddhist monk began his latest speaking tour of the United States on unfamiliar territory, as honored guest at the American Enterprise Institute for a discussion on happiness and free enterprise. The Nobel laureate, famed for his peaceful struggle for greater Tibetan autonomy that is bitterly opposed by China, has in the past courted controversy by identifying with the economic equality promoted by Marxism, although...

Why Leonardo DiCaprio was terrified about receiving his first Oscar

Hollywood star LeonardoDiCaprio says the first time an Oscar-nomination came his way, he was terrified thinking about his victory speech in front of so many people. The 39-year-old actor scored his first Oscar-nomination for Best Supporting Actor for 1993’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, reported Deadline. “Things just happened so quickly. Out of nowhere a nomination came about and I remember being completely shocked. My Leonardo-DiCaprio-Whats-Eating-Gilbert-Grape-first-reaction was being terrified of ever having to go up onstage in front of a billion people,” DiCaprio said. “Someone said ‘a billion people watch this’ and I thought, ‘Oh my god, it’s not like doing a movie where you get a second or third take’. Everyone’s watching every word that you say. That was my initial reaction to it. It’s a nerve-wracking thought,” he added. The actor has been nominated for best actor for Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street at the Oscars this year. Talking about the film earlier, DiCaprio had said, “Much of the film depended on creating a wild and reckless atmosphere. I didn’t hold anything back. There were no stunt doubles for me either – it’s all...

Chutki is an unfunny copy of Gutthi-Mad In India

Sunil Grover’s show Mad In India premired on February 16 amidst lot of speculation and expectations. After the comedian quit popular TV show Comedy Nights with Kapil over alleged tiff between the two, fans were expecting him to present something novel and entertaining on the new show. Colors had also issued a warning that Gutthi – Sunil’s extremely popular character on Comedy Nights with Kapil – could not be recreated on any other show, necessitating some amount of innovation. However, the show’s first episode failed to make a mark. To begin with, Mad In India is not Sunil Grover’s show, as believed earlier. If anything, it seems like a poorer version of Shekhar Suman’s Movers and Shakers, with Manish Paul trying hard to fit into Suman’s shoes. Moving on to the content on the show, most of the gigs and jokes that Manish Paul, Siddharth Jadhav and Sunil Grover tried were way too lame to entertain. Fans expected Sunil to offer something new on this show, which was touted as his – just as Comedy Nights with Kapil was Kapil Sharma’s show on...

Old 97′s Rhett Miller: “I don’t have to try and make everybody happy all the time”

Rhett Miller’s songs are about joy and loneliness, about girls named Doreen and Victoria and Salome, about four-eyed girls and Don DeLillo and J.D. Salinger, about T.Rex and Elliott Smith and Loretta Lynn. He’s the thoughtful literature lover who has written for McSweeney’s and the Atlantic and Salon. He’s the generous musician known to show up and play a fan’s bachelorette party. And he is the most messed-up motherfucker in this town. “Most Messed Up” is the title of the new Old 97′s album, arriving on April 29, and first listen marks it an instant classic. It is an album steeped in pain — pain caused to others, pain drowned in whiskey and pills. Also, bad behavior, bad decisions, betrayals, confusion, frustration, madness, some of which is also fueled by, or smoothed over by, drugs and booze. It’s life on the road, it’s life at home, and none of it is easy. In the lyrics, I count 11 fucks, seven bottles of whiskey, Jameson, malt liquor. Oh, and orange ones, blue ones, green ones, white ones. One intervention. People drink all the way to the bank and then drink again. They get drunk and get it on. They swim in oceans and oceans of alcohol. Yes, it has been an emotionally draining time for Miller — but a liberating one as well, too. Something in the awfulness of the pain...

Manchester City now bigger club than United, says Manuel Pellegrini

Manuel Pellegrini has claimed that Manchester City are now bigger than Manchester United, with the manager believing that knocking Barcelona out of the Champions League would be a defining moment in the club’s evolution. Speaking on the eve of Barça’s visit to the Etihad Stadium, Pellegrini said: “If we only consider this season, there is just one club in Manchester and it’s ours, but you cannot forget what United has done in the previous years. “We are aiming to keep growing by winning many trophies – not just national but international trophies. We are fighting for four titles this year. We have to be patient because you cannot change the team from one day to another. We have to keep the philosophy of the style and for that you need time.” The meeting with the team led by the four-times player of the year, Lionel Messi, indicates the rise of the club owned by the billionaire Sheikh Mansour since September 2008. Pellegrini was asked how important defeating Barcelona would be in City’s quest to establish themselves among the continental elite.”It is a good test. It is important,” he said. “I don’t think it is the most important thing because we are just in the round of 16. We can beat Barcelona and maybe in the next round you can have defeat. “This club is trying to develop those areas....
