Live music in Kathmandu
House of Music
This beery bar is the best place in Kathmandu to listen to original Nepali rock, reggae and R’n’B music, mostly Friday and Saturday nights. It’s in northern Thamel but miles away from the cover bands of the centre. Upcoming concerts are posted on the venue’s Facebook page. It’s part-owned by the drummer of 1974AD, one of Nepal’s biggest bands.

This organisation represents the city’s musician caste and often has informal music jams between 5pm and 7pm at its offices, which are located on the 3rd floor above Equator Expeditions (tourists are welcome). It also plays in local restaurants such as the Northfield Cafe and individual musicians offer music lessons

Jazz Upstairs
It’s worth schlepping out to Lazimpat on a Wednesday and Saturday night (from 8pm) to catch the live jazz in this tiny upstairs bar. The stage is snug and intimate, the vibe is friendly and the clientele is an interesting mix of locals and expats. Monday brings live blues.
